IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE CHEMICAL APPROACH IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE?
Yes. This is the path that was overlooked in the mid-20th century.
It is based on the following principles:
- BALANCE: Producing only as much agricultural output as is necessary—both ecologically and economically—at each specific location while considering all costs, including the preservation of the harvested product. Chasing record yields and trying to “catch up and surpass the leaders in productivity” is unnecessary. Every field, plant species, and crop variety has its own natural production limit.
- SOIL NEEDS TO REST: Soil cannot be endlessly exploited—it must periodically recover from the strain. This can be achieved through fallowing, cover crops rich in nutrients (such as clover, lupin, and green manure crops).
- CROP ROTATION: Constantly alternating crops in different locations prevents pest infestations, as different plants are susceptible to different pests. Conversely, strategically placing crops that naturally repel pests together enhances protection.
- BIOLOGICAL METHOD: The development of biological pest and disease control solutions is currently a rapidly growing field.
- SOIL CARE: No-till farming and cover crop systems play a crucial role in maintaining soil health.
This approach relies on identifying natural enemies of pests in the ecosystem—entomophages (from Greek: entoma – insects, phagos – eater). These include predators, parasites, and other organisms that help regulate pest populations naturally. Entomophages are key agents in the biological method of plant protection.
Antagonistic Plants
Properly combining crops that protect each other from diseases while enriching the soil with beneficial nutrients creates a powerful symbiotic effect. This approach enables the cultivation of crops organically—without chemical fertilizers or pesticides—both in small home gardens and on larger agricultural fields.
A highly effective method involves surrounding crops with living hedges of medicinal and essential oil plants, which act as natural barriers against various pests.
Additionally, poultry (chickens, guinea fowls, ducks) can be used to clear infested areas by feeding on insect pests and their larvae.
Toads and hedgehogs are also valuable allies in pest control, efficiently consuming snails, caterpillars, beetles, and other harmful insects.
Ladybugs and their larvae are natural predators of aphids, spider mites, and Colorado potato beetles in their egg and larval stages.
Some farms actively purchase and cultivate ladybugs to ensure their presence in agricultural fields. To attract them to potato beds, the following methods can be used:
- Planting nectar-rich flowers such as dill, coriander, fennel (allowing them to bloom), elderberry, cornflowers, calendula, yarrow, cosmos, mint, tansy, and geranium along the edges or between rows.
- Spraying foliage with attractant mixtures:
- A sugar solution (150 g of sugar per 1 liter of water).
- A sugar and yeast mixture (equal parts sugar and yeast), either diluted in water or turned into a paste to be applied to stakes placed between potato rows.
For centuries, rural communities have relied on bird helpers to keep orchards and gardens free of insects. To attract them, people install birdhouses and provide food during winter. More recently, specially designed insect shelters have been introduced to support beneficial insects that prey on pests, such as lacewing larvae and ground beetles, which actively feed on aphids and Colorado potato beetle larvae.
Attracting hedgehogs to gardens has both a humorous and highly practical purpose—so much so that it even inspired a national celebration.
THE DRUNKEN HEDGEHOG – A SCOURGE OF PESTS! And this is no joke.
In medieval times, farmers looking to control rodents—mice, rats, and other pests—did not rely on cats as we do today. Instead, they used hedgehogs. These small but voracious creatures eagerly hunted down rodents in their surroundings and were easily lured by bowls of milk left out in vegetable gardens.
One day, in Hungary, someone discovered—perhaps by accident—that hedgehogs also enjoyed beer. From that moment on, it became a common village practice to leave out beer-filled dishes under bushes and near crops. The boozy little creatures would flock to these makeshift pubs in large numbers.
Legend has it that hungover hedgehogs became even meaner and more ruthless towards garden pests, acting as fiercely determined guardians of the land. Farmers would even lock their dogs indoors at night to avoid disturbing the hedgehogs as they carried out their important mission of pest extermination.
As autumn arrived and the harvest season ended, Hungary celebrated “Drunken Hedgehog Day”, much like European harvest festivals.
Today, it’s widely known that hedgehogs love beer, and in some countries, people have even begun worrying about hedgehog alcoholism. So, while a drunken hedgehog may be the most terrifying yet beneficial garden protector, it’s still best to attract them with milk rather than beer.
Traditional Folk Remedies for Plant Diseases and Pests
For centuries, farmers have relied on simple yet effective natural remedies to repel and eliminate plant pests. These include decoctions and infusions made from tomato leaves, chamomile, and other plants, as well as ash infusions, household soap solutions, and tobacco dust.
Prevention and Site Maintenance
The most effective way to prevent pest infestations is thorough cleaning and hot composting of all post-harvest plant residues, weed seeds, fallen infected plants, and diseased trees and shrubs. Adding lime and organic fertilizers to compost accelerates decomposition and reduces the risk of pest outbreaks.
Another highly effective method is deep winter harrowing, which serves a dual purpose:
- Snow and moisture retention in the soil.
- Frost penetration to pest overwintering depths, effectively reducing Colorado potato beetles and other insect populations.
As more farms shift towards biological plant protection methods, the production of biological pest and disease control agents has seen rapid growth in recent years.
Weeds and Soil
It is crucial to understand that weeding is not always beneficial. If the soil is covered with dense cover crops or green manure plants, weeds struggle to break through the turf. On the other hand, aggressive attempts to eradicate quackgrass, sow thistle, and other deep-rooted weeds often worsen their spread, as these plants regenerate easily from broken root fragments.
Excessive plowing with soil turnover contributes to both weed dispersal and the degradation of soil fertility, disrupting its mechanical structure.
A renowned agronomist, Maltsev, once introduced no-till farming—a system that preserved vast hectares of farmland by reducing soil erosion. This method, combined with windbreak and moisture-retaining forest belts, helped protect millions of hectares of soil in Northern Kazakhstan, the Southern Urals, and various regions of European Russia and Ukraine.
Conclusions
The coevolution of human agriculture and the landscapes it inhabits—in this case, the soil ecosystem—has reached a stage where harmonizing this relationship is no longer optional. Ensuring ecological survival while preserving natural systems has become an absolute necessity.
Industrial agriculture and extensive farming practices have exhausted their potential at all levels. A broad and multifaceted transition toward ecologically and chemically safe alternatives in agriculture and food production is now essential.
By adopting the time-tested agricultural practices of different cultures, avoiding overproduction, prioritizing organic fertilizers, and embracing biological and natural pest control methods, we can restore and even enhance the fertility of our lands. Our survival depends on preserving the greatest natural wealth given to us—our soil.
Soil, alongside clean air and water, is humanity’s most valuable resource. It is time for the global community to unite in the effort to save our soils! Save Our Soils – SOS!
The history of agriculture, combined with our understanding of soil regeneration and the new environmental challenges of today, offers a path forward—one that blends traditional wisdom with modern ecological solutions. This path must replace the excessive chemicalization of agriculture with sustainable, nature-based alternatives.
Replacing chemical pest and disease control with safer, alternative methods and technologies is not just a choice—it is a requirement for the sustainable future of agriculture, the health of our economy, and the well-being of our planet!
